Compress a PDF without uploading it
Shrink PDFs that are too large to email or upload. The photos and scanned pages inside are made smaller on your device, while text stays sharp and selectable.
What gets smaller
In a large PDF, most of the size is usually photos and scanned pages. PDF Vault re-saves those images more efficiently and resizes oversized ones, right in your browser. Text, fonts, links and the page layout aren't touched, and the file is never uploaded.
A PDF that is mostly text is already small, so it may shrink only a little. Digitally signed PDFs lose their signature when they're changed, as with any edit.
How to use the Compress PDF tool
- Select one PDF file.
- Choose Balanced for email and uploads, Light to keep the best quality, or Strong for the smallest file.
- Click Compress and Download. You'll see the old and new size. If the PDF can't get smaller, nothing is downloaded.
Questions
How much smaller will my PDF get?
It depends on what's inside. PDFs made of photos or scanned pages often shrink by half or more. PDFs that are mostly text are already small and may shrink only a little.
Does compressing change the text?
No. Only the images inside the PDF are re-saved. Text, fonts, links and the page layout stay as they are, so text remains sharp and selectable.
Is my PDF uploaded?
No. The file is processed by your browser on your own device and never sent to a server.
