How your grade is calculated

With weighted categories, each category's score counts in proportion to its weight. Multiply every score by its weight, add the results, and divide by the total weight you entered. Here is a course where the final exam (40%) hasn't happened yet:

CategoryScoreWeight
Homework92%20%
Quizzes85%15%
Midterm78%25%

(92 × 20 + 85 × 15 + 78 × 25) ÷ 60 = 5,065 ÷ 60 = 84.4%, a B on a common US scale. Dividing by 60 rather than 100 is what makes this your grade so far: the ungraded final doesn't count as a zero.

With total points, add the points you earned and divide by the points possible: 430 out of 500 points is 86%.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my grade different from the one in my school's gradebook?
Gradebooks may count missing work as zero, drop your lowest score in a category, or leave out categories that have not been graded yet. Enter the same assignments and categories your gradebook counts and the numbers should match.
What if my weights don't add up to 100%?
If some work hasn't been graded yet, enter only the graded categories. The calculator divides by the weights you entered, which gives your grade so far. If your weights add up to more than 100%, check your syllabus: the result is scaled to the total you entered.
Can I include extra credit?
Yes. In weighted mode a score above 100% is allowed. In points mode, enter bonus points as points earned with 0 points possible.
Which letter grade cutoffs does it use?
A common US scale: A from 93%, A- from 90%, B+ 87%, B 83%, B- 80%, C+ 77%, C 73%, C- 70%, D+ 67%, D 63%, D- 60% and F below 60%. Your school or instructor may use different cutoffs, so check your syllabus.
